You leave León past the old Hospital de San Marcos and climb to La Virgen del Camino. From there you have two options: follow the road via Villadangos or take the quiet variant via Villar de Mazarife.

The route
Out along the Bernesga and through the western suburbs, with a long urban climb to the sanctuary.
The classic route follows the N-120 on a roadside path. The Villar de Mazarife variant splits off here and runs along country lanes.
A last flat stretch beside the road, between irrigated fields.
Tips
Via Villar de Mazarife it is a little longer with far fewer cars. It rejoins the main route at Hospital de Órbigo.
On the variant, there are few services between La Virgen del Camino and Villar de Mazarife.
Much of the way out of León is on tarmac. Look after your feet with dry socks.

About 25.9 km via Villadangos. It takes about 6 hours.
The Villar de Mazarife one is prettier and quieter. The Villadangos one is more direct but runs beside the road.
It is moderate because of the distance; the terrain is almost flat.
