You cross the river Órbigo on one of the longest medieval bridges in Spain, scene of a knights’ tournament in 1434. Then hills with oaks and holm oaks, the Santo Toribio cross and Astorga, with its cathedral and Gaudí’s palace.

Everything is flat as far as Hospital de Órbigo. Then the ground rolls and climbs to the Santo Toribio cross before dropping to Astorga.

The route
A flat path to the Órbigo bridge, which you walk across for almost 200 metres.
Country lanes between holm oaks and fields, with short climbs. Halfway there is usually a donation stall with fruit.
Down to San Justo de la Vega and into Astorga over a footbridge across the railway and a final climb.
Tips
The cathedral and Gaudí’s Episcopal Palace stand side by side. Try the mantecadas and the cocido maragato.
Between Santibáñez and Santo Toribio there is usually a house offering fruit and drinks for whatever you want to give.
The next two stages climb to the Cruz de Ferro, at 1,505 m. Stock up in Astorga.
