Leaving Triacastela the path splits. The San Xil route, shorter, climbs through hamlets and sunken lanes among oaks. The Samos route, 7 km longer, follows the river Oribio to one of the oldest monasteries in Spain. The two meet again before Sarria.
Profile
Via San Xil you climb about 250 m to the Alto de Riocabo and then descend gradually to Sarria. Via Samos the profile is gentler.

The route

Galician stone hamlets, sunken lanes and cows, descending gently among chestnut trees.
A more urban stretch through San Mamede do Camiño to Sarria, where a great many new pilgrims join.
Tips
The Benedictine monastery of Samos can be visited with a guide and has an albergue. If you have time, it is worth it.
From Sarria onwards you need two stamps a day in your credential to get the Compostela.
It is the most popular starting point. Book if you arrive in high season.

About 18.3 km via San Xil and about 25 km via Samos.
San Xil is shorter and more rural. Samos is longer and flatter, and passes the monastery.
It is moderate via San Xil, with a climb at the start. Via Samos it is easier but longer.
