The first full stage in Galicia runs along the Os Ancares hills, with mountain views on both sides. You pass the bronze pilgrim on the Alto de San Roque, climb to the Alto do Poio and descend among centuries-old chestnut trees to Triacastela.

Hospital da Condesa and the short but hard climb to the Alto do Poio, followed by a flat stretch to Fonfría.
A continuous steep descent through O Biduedo and Ramil, among huge chestnut trees, to Triacastela.
Tips
It is 650 m down in a few kilometres. Your knees will feel it: short steps and poles.
A fresh cheese with protected designation of origin, shaped like a chef’s hat. Try it with honey.
From Triacastela you can go to Sarria via San Xil (shorter) or via Samos and its monastery.
