A long, gentle climb through La Maragatería, land of muleteers, among stone villages with slate roofs such as Castrillo de los Polvazares, Santa Catalina de Somoza and El Ganso, to Rabanal, at the gateway to the mountains of León.

A path through oaks and heather, with the mountains ahead, to Rabanal del Camino.
Tips
The Benedictine monks sing Gregorian chant in the church in the evening. Highly recommended.
It is eaten back to front: first the meat, then the chickpeas and finally the soup.
Rabanal is at about 1,150 m and the next stage climbs to the Cruz de Ferro. Mornings are cold even in summer.
