The loneliest stage of the meseta. From Carrión, a dead-straight 17 km Roman road, the Via Aquitana, crosses fields without a single village to Calzadilla de la Cueza. Then Ledigos and Terradillos, old Templar territory.

The climbing is minimal. The difficulty lies in the distance and the 17 km without water or shelter.

The route
You leave over the bridge past the monastery of San Zoilo, and after a stretch of tarmac the Roman road begins.
Twelve kilometres of straight track between cereal fields. In season there is usually a drinks stall halfway along.
You return to the N-120 on a roadside path, through Ledigos and Terradillos, two adobe villages.
Tips
There are no fountains in the 17 km to Calzadilla. In summer, carry even more.
A head torch and an early start keep you off the Roman road in the hottest hours.
Calzadilla de la Cueza (17.2 km) has an albergue if you don’t feel like going on.
